    Value Chain/Market Systems Development Specialist

    We are seeking a Value Chain/Market Systems Development Specialist for the USAID-funded Afghanistan Value Chain (AVC) – High Value Crops (HVC) Project. This Project will work with anchor firms nationwide to reverse market failures, strengthen backward and forward linkages, drive growth, and create jobs for men, women, and youth along, while supporting the rapid growth of the fruit and nuts, high-value horticulture, spices, and medicinal crops value chains. The Project will contribute positive and measurable impacts to the sectors and will increase the efficiency of market actors involved at every stage of the value chain.

    Responsibilities

    • Works with public and private actors to provides technical support to current and emerging male and female market systems actors to achieve goals.
    • Develops and carries out training project staff and farmers that will participate in the portfolio, working with private sector to facilitate embedded training where feasible.
    • Ensures all training materials meet donor and ACDI/VOCA branding and marketing and gender sensitivity.
    • Determines actual and potential sources of learning and innovation, distribution of benefits, and other details about the current operations of and anticipated changes to the market system.
    • Facilitates and supports farm-level training on good agricultural practices, pesticides use, handling and storage, and on village saving and lending methodology to mitigate credit challenges.
    • Leads activities to foster improved performance and greater inclusion in the market system.
    • Identifies and engages agribusinesses in market systems development activities. Facilitates their ownership and leadership in identifying and investing in new technologies.
    • Monitors the M&E indicators and documents key qualitative and quantitative changes. Oversees the data collection and monitoring of field activities.
    • Plans activities and carries out commitments through sub-grants and agreements. Participates in internal review of grant proposals for small investment grants

    Qualifications

    • Advanced (graduate) degree in agriculture, agricultural economics or related field
    • At least seven years hands-on experience related to production, post-harvest handling and marketing, including working with public and private actors to facilitate market-based, sustainable provision of services to market actors and foster inclusive market linkages. Previous experience working for an international NGO, in agriculture sector development and commercial entities preferred.
    • Equivalent combination of education and experience.
    • In-depth knowledge of principal VC activities, especially production, post-harvest management, trade/markets and inclusive growth approaches.
    • Knowledge of productivity and quality improvement technologies and developing and implementing farmer training programs, including working with public and private actors to deliver market-based training and services.
    • Excellent critical thinking skills and sound judgment.
    • Ability to communicate, negotiate, advise, persuade, or resolve issues that are highly complex or sensitive in nature.
    • Strong written communication skills, including demonstrated ability to write required documents in a clear, concise, well-organized manner.
    • Good communication and inter-personal skills with an ability to listen and help others understand complex ideas
    • Fluent in English, both oral and written
    • Proven ability to manage deadlines, work independently with minimal supervision, submit high-quality work plans, prioritize workload, and multi-task in fast-paced environment.
